The City of Broad Shoulders, Chicago October 10, 2008

Called the Windy City and the City of Broad Shoulders, Chicago is the largest city by population in the state of Illinois and the American Midwest of the United States. It is also one of the largest cities in North America and among the world’s twenty-five largest urban areas by population. The World Cities Study Group at Loughborough University has rates it as an alpha world city. With the second largest central business district in the U.S. Chicago is a major financial center.

Chicago was founded in the early 1800s, and grew up with the country, serving as the main connection between the established east coast cities and the wide open Wild West frontier. After being founded in 1833 near a portage between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River watershed, Chicago was incorporated as a city in 1837.

Chicago has one of the world’s best collections of modern architecture – Chicago’s towering skyline, from Frank Lloyd Wright houses to 110-story Sears Tower. It is also the cultural and financial heart of middle America. Many major US companies head offices are located in the Loop downtown. Chicago is also the home to some of the most important commodity markets.

Chicago attracts sizeable number of tourists from the nation and around the world. There are numerous places worth visiting including shopping centers, fine restaurants, museums, parks, important buildings and landmarks. Chicago has attractive waterfront and nightlife as well. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra which is recognized as one of the finest orchestras in the world, which performs at Symphony Center is in Chicago. Visitors to Chicago are also recommended to try out the various cuisines of the city. When you are in Chicago do make sure to enjoy the various musical festivals.
