Called the Windy City and the City of Broad Shoulders, Chicago is the largest city by population in the state of Illinois and the American Midwest of the United States. The World Cities Study Group at Loughborough University has rates it as an alpha world city. With the second largest central business district in the U.S. Chicago is a major financial center.
Chicago was founded in the early 1800s, and grew up with the country, serving as the main connection between the established east coast cities and the wide open Wild West frontier. After being founded in 1833 near a portage between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River watershed, Chicago was incorporated as a city in 1837.
Chicago has one of the world’s best collections of modern architecture – Chicago’s towering skyline, from Frank Lloyd Wright houses to 110-story Sears Tower. It is also the cultural and financial heart of middle America. Many major US companies head offices are located in the Loop downtown. Chicago is also the home to some of the most important commodity markets.
